THE LUMBY CABARET PRODUCTION WORKSHOP

Remember, a few years ago we had a local theatre production The Moose Under Coyote Sleeping celebrating the history of Lumby.  The show was successfully produced and well received by the public.

Since then a number of interesting things have happened locally.  We came up with the idea of a cabaret show which would draw upon current events and how these affect our daily lives.  People have interesting stories to tell which can serve as the ground material for dramatic performances.  People have hopes and fears which can be expressed in music, drama and story.

We've set up a target:  A Lumby Cabaret evening later this year at the Whitevalley Community Centre.  We want to make sure that this isn't just a show that people would go and see only as audience.  We want to draw people out, to become personally involved in the drama. You may have interesting ideas but they will not amount to anything unless you go out and share your talent with the world.

We want a communal group activity-- drawing energy from people who wish to communicate with others in the form of music, dialogue, dance, actions and performances, and at the same time, sharing food and drink together. In February we issued a community news release, telling people about the October show, but particularly inviting people to become directly involved in creating the show, to be part of it.

We want people who like to dance, to sing, to play music, to tell jokes, to tell stories, act them out and even write scripts and perform improvisations.

Then it became clear that we really need a local group which would come together socially on a regular basis to share ideas and insights, stories and music.  This could be a lot of fun.  We could schedule one evening a week for a couple of hours.  People could just drop in, as little or as often as they liked.  Each evening there would be a speaker or instructor addressing one aspect of producing a cabaret, followed by an open discussion, a group activity, or an individual project.  Through May and June of 2018, we could cover a number of topics outlining the whole process of putting a show together.  We could call this group The Lumby Cabaret Production Workshop.

We would do eight sessions before summer.

Then in the summer there would be a break, but we would schedule meetings with individuals or small groups working on special projects.  Then at the end of August we would re-convene for another eight sessions which would concentrate on putting the show together-- scripting, storyboarding, rehearsals, costumes, props, music, orchestration, publicity posters, ticket sales, and ending with a dress rehearsal before the big night of performance.
